Presidential Message: Nowruz

March 2005

I send greetings to those celebrating Nowruz.

Nowruz marks the arrival of a new year and the celebration of life. It has long been an opportunity to spend time with family and friends and enjoy the beauty of nature.

Many Americans who trace their heritage to Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Central Asia observe this special occasion to preserve their rich heritage and ensure that their values and traditions are passed on to future generations. This festival also reminds all Americans of the diversity that has made our Nation stronger and better.

Laura and I send our best wishes for peace and prosperity in the New Year.

GEORGE BUSH PUTS IRAN LEADERSHIP ON NOTICE

The same is true of Iran , a nation now held hostage by a small clerical elite that is isolating and repressing its people. The regime in that country sponsors terrorists in the Palestinian territories and in Lebanon -- and that must come to an end. The Iranian government is defying the world with its nuclear ambitions -- and the nations of the world must not permit the Iranian regime to gain nuclear weapons. America will continue to rally the world to confront these threats. And tonight, let me speak directly to the citizens of Iran : America respects you, and we respect your country. We respect your right to choose your own future and win your own freedom. And our nation hopes one day to be the closest of friends with a free and democratic Iran

Exile call prompts Iran protests
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/3694594.stm

By Sadeq Saba
BBC regional analyst

A call from a US-based Iranian TV personality has prompted thousands of Iranians to protest for more freedoms.

Reformist students protesting in Iran

Iranians are showing signs of desperation for change  in Teheran and other cities after Ahura Pirouz Khaleghi YAZDI urged protests across Iran BBC

People took to the streets of the capital, Tehran, and other cities on Sunday after Ahura Pirouz Khaleghi Yazdi urged protests across Iran.

The exile has predicted Iran's Islamic government will fall on 1 October.

Nobody had heard of Mr Yazdi until a few months ago when he set up a satellite channel in California to try to overthrow the Iranian government.

Since then he has become a hot topic of conversation both among disaffected Iranians and exiled opposition groups.

For several weeks he has been declaring that he intends to return to Iran on 1 October to end the rule of Islamic clerics.

He has called on the Iranian diaspora to accompany him in his so-called liberation flight and has urged his supporters inside the country to stage protests.

He is advocating peaceful means and civil disobedience.

TV power

Mr Yazdi, who seems to be about 50, apparently left Iran when he was a child - and his command of the Persian language is poor.

The pro-government press in Tehran has described him as insane.

His simplistic views about overthrowing the Islamic government singlehandedly have also angered serious exile opposition leaders who have labelled him a demagogue.

But analysts say the fact that thousands of people heeded his call and took to the streets on Sunday evening proves that Iranians are desperate for change.

The Yazdi phenomenon also shows how US-based opposition satellite TV stations are becoming an important means of putting pressure on the Iranian government.

To Mr. Clinton and those of JTA publisher of the note by Clinton

 Clinton, Carter:

One made sure that the Islamic Regime of mullahs are obstacle in the road to the Democracy and other made sure that Osama Ben Laden is well and alive so can kill by thousands.  No one forgot the question period by Al Gore and Oliver North, when North said, he is afraid of his and his family life because of Osama Ben Laden, and the Democratic Party’s on time congressman ignored the fact, and when he was vice president both Clinton and Gore put Osama issue behind their mind… or Clinton hide it under the table in the Oval office when he was damn busy there doing other things.

Democrats, their intention never been delivering peace to this world. They Democratic Party; one of the most far left; the which so far kept disgracing themselves and their party, by some foolish sympathy for dictators like Saddam Hussein, Ben Laden and Fidel Castro.

When Ex-President was in Israel prior to the New Year (2006) attending the concert that everyone distributed through the Internet, I was asking some questions, what is behind all these, Clinton never moves a finger unless there is some hidden, un-explainable agenda behind it. Is that it Mr. Ex-President??

Mr. Carter, Mr. Al Gore, Ex-President including but not limited to the Congressman McDermott always opposed peace in the Middle East, liberation of Iraq and Afghanistan for that matter.  They at every turn opposed the efforts of the United States and its allies in the war against terrorism. Unfortunately they also have their own fans...

Mr. Clinton, are you wearing Ahmadinejad mouth piece, or you are drumming different tune to please citizens of that tiny Island ??

 What about humanity??

Over some 700 years ago an Iranian poet said:

All human beings are in truth akin,

All in creation share one origin.

When fate allots a member pangs and pains,

No ease for other members then remains.

If, unperturbed, another’s grief canst scan,

Thou are not worthy of the name of man.  <Poet

The limited strike followed the alleged arrest of 10 bus drivers for encouraging colleagues to strike to protest low wages, said driver Davoud Razavi.

Mullahs network of tunnels and underground facilities

Dow Jones Newswires    21-12-05 1348GMT   Copyright (c) 2005 Dow Jones & Company, Inc.
LONDON (AP.US)--An Iranian exile group said Tuesday that Tehran has built a network of tunnels and underground facilities to conceal parts of its nuclear program.

The National Council of Resistance of Iran said the facilities conceal nuclear research workshops, atomic equipment and missile command and control centers. It said the information was based on sources within the Iranian establishment, but didn't identify them.

"The Iranian Resistance has now received information about 14 locations where these tunnels and underground facilities have been built near Tehran, Isfahan, Qom, and some other cities," said Hossein Abedini, a member of the group's foreign affairs committee.

The group urged the International Atomic Energy Agency to refer Iran to the U.N. Security Council for its activities and to break off talks about its nuclear program.

Mohamed ElBaradei, the IAEA's director general, has said Iran's program was concealed for 20 years and that more transparency is needed by Tehran so the agency can allay concerns about whether it was designed for peaceful purposes or to develop nuclear weapons.

In a speech in London earlier this month, ElBaradei said Iran's uranium enrichment program - a possible pathway to nuclear arms - remains suspended and the IAEA "hasn't seen a smoking gun."

Iran says it wants only to make fuel, but international concern is growing that the program could be misused.   European Union-Iranian talks about this sensitive issue are scheduled to resume this week.

Songs such as George Michael's "Careless Whisper," Eric Clapton's "Rush" and the Eagles' "Hotel California" have regularly accompanied Iranian broadcasts, as do tunes by saxophonist Kenny G.

But the official IRAN Persian daily reported Monday that Ahmadinejad, as head of Iran 's Supreme Cultural Revolutionary Council, ordered the enactment of an October ruling by the council to ban Western music.

Juvenile Offender Executed Despite Calls for Clemency

Amnesty International
Public Statement
http://web.amnesty.org/library/Index/ENGMDE130782005

Amnesty International is outraged that once again Iran has carried out the execution of a juvenile offender, who was convicted of a crime committed before he was 18 years old.

Twenty year-old Afghan national, Rostam Tajik, was executed in public in Esfahan on 10 December – ironically, the day which the UN has marked annually as Human Rights Day. He was reportedly sentenced to qisas (retribution) by Branch 9 of the General Court of Esfahan for the May 2001 murder of a woman, Nafiseh Rafi’i, committed when he was 16 years old. The sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court. According to the Iranian newspaper Keyhan, Rostam Tajik, an apprentice with Nafiseh Rafi’i’s husband, went into the couple’s house to burgle it. However, once inside he killed her and cut the throat of her 11-year-old daughter, whose screams alerted the neighbours. Rostam Tajik fled, and the neighbours took the daughter to hospital for treatment that saved her life. Rostam Tajik fled to Qazvin , west of Tehran , but was later arrested. On 9 December, Philip Alston, the United Nations Commission on Human Rights Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, called on the Iranian authorities not to proceed with the execution.

The Special Rapporteur said: “At a time when virtually every other country in the world has firmly and clearly renounced the execution of people for crimes they committed as children, the Iranian approach is particularly unacceptable…It is all the more surprising because the obligation to refrain from such executions is not only clear and incontrovertible, but the Government of Iran has itself stated that it will cease this practice.”

As a state party to the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), Iran has undertaken not to execute anyone for an offence committed when they were under the age of 18.

Nevertheless, Iran has executed at least eight juvenile offenders so far this year, two of whom were still under 18 at the time they were executed. The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, which monitors states’ implementation of the CRC, in January 2005 urged Iran to immediately stay all executions of people convicted of crimes committed when they were under 18, and abolish the use of the death penalty in such cases. The Committee said that it deplore[d] the fact that Iran had continued to carry out such executions even after it ratified the CRC, including the execution of Iman Farokhi, for an offence committed when he was 17 years old, that had taken place on the very day of the Committee’s examination of Iran’s second periodic report.

Draft legislation that would prohibit the use of the death penalty for offences committed under the age of 18 has been under consideration for four years, but has not yet been passed. Government officials have also made a distinction between murder (for which the punishment is qisas) and other crimes carrying the death penalty, indicating that even if promulgated, the draft legislation would not prevent the execution of all those under 18 at the time of their offence. Amnesty International urges the Iranian government to take the necessary steps as a matter of urgency to ensure that no one in Iran may be sentenced to death for any crime, including murder, committed before they reach the age of 18.

Iran has executed at least five other people since the beginning of December.
US ' Rice says Iran is a problem that must be dealt with

http://www.forbes.com/finance/feeds/afx/2005/12/14/afx2390392.html

WASHINGTON (AFX) - Iran has become a problem for Middle East stability on several fronts that the international community will have to address, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said.

Taking questions after a speech on Iraq to the Heritage Foundation, Rice again took Iran to task on a range of issues, from its suspected nuclear arms program to its anti-democratic clerical regime.

' I do think that it has to be said, it has to be spoken, that Iran is a problem for a stable and democratizing Middle East, ' she said. ' And the international community will have to find a way to deal with that. '

The chief US diplomat reiterated US complaints the Iranians were trying to clandestinely interfere in neighboring Iraq , where Shiite Muslims are in the majority.

She said they were also supporting the Iraqi insurgency as well as backing Islamic militants opposing efforts to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The recent verbal assaults by Iran ' s hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Israel ' have, I think, sharpened the contradictions and made clear that this regime is out of step with the international community, ' Rice said.

Former White House aide says Iran gravest threat to Iraq

London ,  – A former top adviser to United States President George W. Bush on Iraq policy described Iran on Monday as the greatest external threat to Iraq , Reuters news agency reported.

Robert Blackwill, who was deputy national security adviser during Bush ' s first term, told the Council on Foreign Relations think tank, “Iraq thinks Iran is the major strategic threat to Iraq”, not suicide bombers or insurgents.

Blackwill was previously Bush ' s special envoy to Iraq and then ambassador to India . He resigned from the administration to join a consulting firm in November 2004 and is still well-regarded among many in the administration for his analytical insight, including on both Iraq and India

Victims of Iran ill-fated C130 flight were insured

http://www.iranmania.com/News/ArticleView/Default.asp?NewsCode=38566&NewsKind=Current%20Affairs

LONDON, December (IranMania) - Each passenger of the C130 plane which crashed on December 6 killing all on board, was insured and will be entitled to rls 300 mln in insurance, said a top insurance official, IRNA reported.

Head of Iran Central Insurance organization Abdolnasser Hemmati said on Saturday that based on insurance policy issued by Alborz Insurance Company, each of the passengers of the ill-fated C130 plane will receive rls 300 million in insurance because they had been under passenger insurance coverage. Hemmati said that the plane had not been covered by any insurance other than passenger insurance.

The Lockheed C130 Hercules transport aircraft crashed into a 10-storey high-rise in a residential complex on December 6, 2006, shortly after takeoff due to technical problems, resulting in the martyrdom of 106 passengers, mostly media persons, including two IRNA staffers.

The fellows and scholars of the IPC include a former CIA employee and retired military officers who benefit by promoting future wars.  America ’s defense contractors need endless military wars to stay in business.  Some American traitors are willing to cooperate, even if it means supporting the communist takeover of another country.

We need to praise Eli Segall, a student brave enough to submit a paper to a professor who is one of the strongest advocates of the communist takeover of Iran by the Iranian Communist MEK (Rajavi Cult) terrorists.

All 94 people on crashed Iran plane feared dead

Iranian Military Plane Crashes in Tehran ; 106 Die (Update3)

Dec. 6 (Bloomberg) -- An Iranian military transport plane carrying 94 people today crashed in a residential area in the south of the Iranian capital, Tehran , killing all on board as well as residents on the ground, an official said.

``No one on board has survived,'' an aide to Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Bagher Qalibaf, who declined to be identified, said in a telephone interview. ``The number of casualties on the ground is not known yet.'' The state-run Islamic Republic News Agency IRNA put the death toll at 106, citing military figures.

State television pictures showed cars burning and flames coming out of a nine-story building next to the crash site. The plane was carrying reporters to cover a military exercise in southern Iran , Iran Broadcasting said on its Web site.

The Lockheed Martin C-130 crashed 4 miles (6 kilometers) from Mehrabad International Airport, located near the city center, as the aircraft was attempting an emergency landing because of a technical difficulty with one engine, Rajab Mehrjooee, director general of the airport, said in a telephone interview. The plane, which left Mehrabad at 1:22 p.m. local time for the city of Bandar Abbas , caught fire as it crashed, he said.

Iran 's civil and military aviation has one of the worst safety records, with poor maintenance of its fleet usually blamed. The U.S. prohibits most trade with the Islamic Republic, meaning Iran can't buy spare parts for its ageing fleet of U.S.- built Boeing Co. 707s, 727s, 747s and C-130s purchased before the 1979 Islamic revolution, except on the secondary market.

Poor Visibility . Visibility in Tehran was poor today because of thick smog, which led to a two-day closure of primary schools in the capital.

The C-130, which began military service in 1956, is a medium-transport, propeller-driven aircraft designed to land on short and rough landing strips.

The U.S. cut diplomatic ties with Iran in November 1979 when Islamic militants seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran , taking its staff hostage. Fifty-two American diplomats were held for 444 days until their release in January 1981.

All 117 people on board an Iranian passenger plane died in February 2002 when it crashed into a mountain in the west of the country. In April this year, three people died at Mehrabad after a Boeing 707 operated by Saha Airlines veered off the runway as it landed and caught fire.

More than 90 injured were transported by helicopter and ambulance to local hospitals, Iran 's state television IRINN reported. All people living in the neighboring nine-story building survived, it said.

Tehran has an estimated population of 12 million. A new airport, located about 30 miles (45 kilometers) south of Tehran , opened in April this year. Flights are gradually being relocated to it from Mehrabad.

El Baradei: Iran only months away from a bomb

AEA chairman Muhammad ElBaradei on Monday confirmed Israel 's assessment that Iran is only a few months away from creating an atomic bomb. If Teheran indeed resumed its uranium enrichment in other plants, as threatened, it will take it only "a few months" to produce a nuclear bomb, El-Baradei told The Independent. On the other hand, he warned, any attempt to resolve the crisis by non-diplomatic means would "open a Pandora's box. There would be efforts to isolate Iran ; Iran would retaliate; and at the end of the day you have to go back to the negotiating table to find the solution.

Message to the Congress of the United States

TO THE CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES:

Section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)) provides for the automatic termination of a national emergency unless, prior to the anniversary date of its declaration, the President publishes in the Federal Register and transmits to the Congress a notice stating that the emergency is to continue in effect beyond the anniversary date. Consistent with this provision, I have sent the enclosed notice to the Federal Register for publication, stating that the Iran emergency declared by Executive Order 12170 on November 14, 1979, is to continue in effect beyond November 14, 2005. The most recent notice continuing this emergency was published in the Federal Register on November 12, 2004 (69 FR 65513).

Our relations with Iran have not yet returned to normal, and the process of implementing the January 19, 1981, agreements with Iran is still underway. For these reasons, I have determined that it is necessary to continue the national emergency declared on November 14, 1979, with respect to Iran, beyond November 14, 2005.
